A Nigerian mother has been arrested at Vienna International Airport after she allegedly dumped her newborn baby inside a bin in an airport toilet.
The woman was said to have committed the dastardly act in order not to miss her flight.
The baby was discovered by a cleaner inside a plastic bag at Vienna International Airport, but died later in hospital in the early hours of Thursday.
The woman, aged 27-year-old was travelling from Minsk, Belarus, to Washington DC.
She explained to the airport authorities that she had to dump her baby at the airport dustbin in order not to miss her flight.
She was taken to the hospital when she started bleeding. A police spokesman said she was ‘found bleeding in the waiting area’ and taken to hospital.
The mother reportedly said she thought her baby was stillborn, although officials said that the child died in hospital ‘due to a prolonged lack of oxygen’.
A post-mortem examination is due to take place to determine the exact cause of death.
The woman, who is a student, is currently being held in custody.
Prosecutor Friedrich Koehl has said that the woman will be investigated on possible charges of ‘suspicion of killing a child at birth’ and the offence carries a sentence of up to five years in jail.
