Nigeria’s first self-declared homos*xual and activist for the right of gay men, Bisi Alimi has shocked many in Nigeria when news and pictures of his gay marriage with his white male European lover, Anthony, tied the knot on Saturday, 5th of November in England.
Bisi Alimi has been on exile for over 12 years for declaring his gay status at a time when gay awareness wasn’t rampant. He opened up about his s*xuality on Funmi Iyanda’s shows and immediately he started getting death threats which made him to take assylum in the UK. The television talk host, Funmi Iyanda was present at his wedding in England last Saturday.
Bisi Alimi has remained a strong figure in the fight for Gay Right even in United Kingdom. He has aired his voice on a lot of gay right issues in Nigeria which led to his been recognized in the UK, Gay community and to be added to The Gay UK LGBT 2014 Honour List in recognition of his exemplary work for ‘Education in the LGBT Community’ on January 1st 2014.
He took to social media to announce his wedding a day before the wedding and had this to say:
“In Presence of friends & family from around the world, Anthony & I will say ‘I Do’.
But we remember places in the world where love is crime.”
Immediately after pictures started coming in on social media, Nigerians began to shared their opinions and thoughts on his wedding. Some congratulated him while some lambasted him and called him names.
